Important Notes The ‘Unique + More’ Course challenges students to think mathematically, rather than ‘do mathematics’; it is a fun and engaging way to challenge intellectual mathematical thought. ‘Unique + More’ uses a robot’s attempt to save the world to pose this concept: a mathematician can guarantee accuracy if the solution is based on the ‘Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic’. This course has been undertaken successfully by highly able students in Years 2 and 3 and will explore strands of the Years 4, 5, 6 and 7 Australian Mathematics Curriculum.

Course Outline

The school can select one or up to four students to participate in this course.

Students do not need external assessments to participate in Born to Soar courses. We ask that you read the course descriptions carefully to determine that the required skill level is appropriate for your students.

The ‘Unique + More’ Course endeavours to challenge students to think of mathematics as a creative discipline. Participants will be challenged by the investigation of prime and composite numbers and marvel at the ancient Greek civilization and their discoveries made before 300BC. The facilitator will lead the students through secrets saved in the memory of an ancient robot using the understandings of the uniqueness of a number defined through the product of its prime factors. The students will be asked to interpret mathematical statements based on the factorisation of numbers using repeated division and multiples of numbers. Building factor trees, pondering on divisibility rules and playing with the ‘powers’ of numbers will assist them in reaching an outcome that will reveal a secret hidden for centuries from the world. It will be necessary at times for the students to complete tasks away from the computer and the virtual classroom. The students will need to have a notebook, writing materials and a calculator for their ongoing work associated with this course.

 

Student pre-requisites skills required to join this classroom:

  • mathematically able above their year level
  • able to complete all four operations without a digital device with accuracy
  • understanding of the relationship between multiplication tables and division

This course has been undertaken successfully by highly able students in Years 2 and 3.

  • an adult supervisor needs to be on hand during virtual classes
  • students’ work will need to be uploaded to their personal cloud folder

The specific mathematics skills that are targeted in this course are:

Year 4 / Number and Algebra / Patterns and algebra

  • Solve word problems by using number sentences involving multiplication or division where there is no remainder

 

Year 5 / Number and Algebra / Number and place value

  • Identify and describe factors and multiples of whole numbers and use them to solve problems

 

 Year 5 / Number and Algebra / Number and place value

  • Use efficient mental and written strategies and apply appropriate digital technologies to solve problems

 

Year 6 / Number and Algebra / Number and place value

  • Understand that some numbers have special properties and that these properties can be used to solve problems

 

Year 7 / Number and Algebra / Number and place value

  • Investigate index notation and represent whole numbers as products of powers of prime numbers

 

7.2 ACARA

It is assumed that teachers will use a variety of mathematical task types including those that give students choice of approach and those for which there is an optimal strategy; those for which there are various possible solutions and those which have a single correct answer; those that prompt the development and use of mathematical models; those that incorporate ideas across content strands; and those that require thinking in more than one discipline.
