    Stretchy Streetchy Streeetchy at School

    Soaring into Numbers, Virtual
    $995.00
Important Notes The 'Stretchy, Streetchy, Streeetchy’ Course challenges students to think mathematically, rather than ‘do mathematics’; it is a fun and engaging way to challenge intellectual mathematical thought. 'Stretchy, Streetchy, Streeetchy’ uses the imaginative world of GoPop to pose this concept: one number can look totally different to its original self and still hold a constant value. This course has been undertaken successfully by highly able students in Years 2 and 3 and will explore strands from Years 4 and 5 Australian Mathematics Curriculum.
    • Overview

The ‘Stretchy Streetchy Streeetchy’ Course endeavours to challenge students to think of mathematics as a creative discipline. Participants will be challenged by the investigation of the many ways a number can be represented while retaining the integrity of its value. The facilitator will lead the students through the world of GoPop using the understandings of number through representation, ordering and place value partitioning of large numbers. The students will be asked to interpret a numerical statement in the form of basic algebra while investigating how patterns in numbers can be used to assess the accuracy of mathematical solutions. Creating their own unique colourful character that has the attributes of a citizen of GoPop will be part of the challenge. Each student will answer the question: can many answers still be accurate when working with a black and white, right and wrong discipline, pure mathematics? It will be necessary at times for the students to complete tasks away from the computer and the virtual classroom. The students will need to have a notebook, writing materials and a calculator for their ongoing work associated with this course.

Student pre-requisites skills required to join this classroom:

    • mathematically able above their year level
    • able to complete all four operations without a digital device with accuracy

This course has been undertaken successfully by highly able students in Years 2 and 3.

     Parents please note:

    • an adult supervisor needs to be on hand during virtual classes
    • students’ work will need to be uploaded to their personal cloud folder

      Teachers please note:

    • an adult supervisor should be allocated to virtual classroom times
    • students’ work will need to be uploaded to their personal cloud folder

    Australian Curriculum Mathematics Descriptions

The specific mathematics skills that are targeted in this course are:

Year 4 / Number and Algebra / Number and place value

    • Apply place value to partition, rearrange and regroup numbers to at least tens of thousands to assist calculations and solve problems

Year 4 / Number and Algebra / Patterns and algebra

    • Explore and describe number patterns resulting from performing multiplication

Year 5 / Number and Algebra / Number and place value

    • Solve problems involving multiplication of large numbers by one- or two-digit numbers using efficient mental, written strategies and appropriate digital technologies

Year 5 / Number and Algebra / Number and place value

    • Use efficient mental and written strategies and apply appropriate digital technologies to solve problems

    7.2 ACARA

It is assumed that teachers will use a variety of mathematical task types including those that give students choice of approach and those for which there is an optimal strategy; those for which there are various possible solutions and those which have a single correct answer; those that prompt the development and use of mathematical models; those that incorporate ideas across content strands; and those that require thinking in more than one discipline.
